Steel Institute Staff Honored by the National Recycling Coalition

Gregory L. Crawford and Brandie Sebastian holding their awards from the National Recycling Coalition, September 2014PITTSBURGH, Pa (Sept. 23, 2014) – The Steel Recycling Institute (SRI) of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) has received national recognition from the National Recycling Coalition (NRC) in an awards ceremony during the Resource Recycling Conference this past week in New Orleans, hosted by Resource Recycling Magazine.

Brandie Sebastian, Manager of Life Cycle Assessment, was awarded the “Bill Heenan Emerging Leader Award,” given to an outstanding individual under 35 recognized as a leader in sustainability. Gregory L. Crawford, Executive Director, received the highest honor, a “Lifetime Achievement in Recycling Award,” recognizing his decades of leadership in the field of recycling.

“Brandie and Greg are dedicated and tireless advocates for sustainability and the environment, and have been driving forces in the steel industry’s leadership in this area,” said Thomas J. Gibson, president and CEO of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). “Greg and Brandie epitomize professionalism and set a standard for young professionals in the steel industry. They are much-deserving of this national recognition and we congratulate them.”

Crawford, who is retiring at the beginning of 2015 after 25 years in the steel industry, has spent much of his career leading national efforts to maximize the recycling of post-consumer materials. Sebastian, who came to SRI just last year, has a key role in the industry’s focus to research and promote the life cycle advantages of steel versus competing materials.

AISI serves as the voice of the North American steel industry in the public policy arena and advances the case for steel in the marketplace as the preferred material of choice.  AISI also plays a lead role in the development and application of new steels and steelmaking technology.  AISI is comprised of 21 member companies, including integrated and electric furnace steelmakers, and approximately 125 associate members who are suppliers to or customers of the steel industry.  AISI’s member companies represent more than three quarters of both U.S. and North American steel capacity. For more news about steel and its applications, view AISI’s website at, or follow AISI on Twitter at @AISISteel.

SRI is dedicated to communicating the sustainable efforts of the North American steel industry. The SRI educates the solid waste industry, government, business and ultimately the consumer about the benefits of steel’s recycling accomplishments and advancements in sustainability.
